Lightnin' Hopkins Blues Master Works

When the legendary blues musician Lightnin’ Hopkins died in January 1982, the New York Times was moved enough to record, in its obituary for the highly respected 70-year-old guitarist and composer, that he was “one of the great country blues - and perhaps the greatest single influence on rock guitar players”.

Rolling Stone magazine saluted Hopkins’ achievements with a placing in its 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time poll, and his hundreds of recordings remain in constant demand among blues music enthusiasts everywhere.

Lightnin Hopkins has even been honoured with a life-size statue in Crockett, Texas – an appropriate tribute to the man who was known as the “Texas Troubadour” and whose music brought pleasure to so many people.

Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead

"Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" is the centrepiece of several individual songs in an extended set-piece performed by the Munchkin characters, Glinda (Billie Burke) and Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

It was composed by Harold Arlen, with the lyrics written by E.Y. Harburg. The group of songs celebrate the death of the Wicked Witch of the East after Dorothy "dropped a house on her", though actually this was caused by the tornado.

In April 2013, the song became target of a social media campaign to make it number one in the UK Singles Chart following the death of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

George Formby Happy Go Lucky Me

Available from Amazon & iTunes, Spotify

Superb new collection of ALL George Formby's finest and funniest songs. 30 original recordings digitally remastered, including Happy Go Lucky Me (as recently featured in a Sainsbury's TV campaign), Leaning On A Lamp Post, When I'm Cleaning Windows and many more.

This CD is the perfect starting point for the Formby-curious, and a great collection for the committed fan.

George Formby, born George Hoy Booth, 26th May 1904, was a singer/ songwriter, British comedy actor and a comedian. His style was to sing light but comical songs, played on the banjolele (a ukulele-banjo). When he took his first steps into the limelight in the 1930s-40s he was a major star of both the stage and the screen.

The name of George Formby came after his father passed away in 1921. George went on to use this name after his father used it as his stage name throughout his career as a comedian in Lancashire. When George Formby was younger he had undergone two moves before he settled down in the home that he lived in when he later died in 1961. On the second move he had dropped his earlier career as a jockey, and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps as a performer/ comedian, performing his father’s material until he was settled in and knew what the audience liked to hear.

The songs in which he sung on his early days on stage were full of comic and double entendre played on a banjolele. This later on became his trademark as people enjoyed the catchy tune that accompanied the comical lyrics.

Although George Formby died at the young age of just 56, he is still known and appreciated today for his approach to and style of music, making him one of the more unique musicians that people love to listen to, to give a variety in genre and style.

Roy Orbsion Dream Baby

Available from Amazon & Spotify and iTunes. A brilliant new collection of greatest hits from 'The Big O'. 59 original recordings digitally remastered.

Includes, Crying, Only The Lonely, Running Scared and many more.

Roy Orbison, born Roy Kelton Orbison, 23rd April 1936 in Madison, Tennessee was an American singer songwriter well known by the nickname ‘The Big O’, and his distinctive and very powerful voice, multipart compositions and emotional, dark ballads.

Roy Orbison was also very well known for standing in one position when performing, wearing black clothes and dark glasses.

This added to his mystery persona. Although he sang each of his songs in a natural baritone, music scholars have suggested that he could have had a three-four octave range, in which he could have used to vary his music/ singing style.

Roy Orbison's greatest success came between 1960 and 1964, when 22 of his songs were placed in the Billboard Top Forty including ‘Oh Pretty Woman’ and ‘Only the Lonely’. His career began to deteriorate throughout the 1970s until several covers of his songs and the use of ‘In Dreams’ in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet revived his career in the 80s.

From reviving his career in music, in 1988 he joined the supergroup Travelling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, as well as releasing a solo album. Later on in 1988 he died of a heart attack, completely ending his career, but not taking his success of brilliant music and performances with it. To this day, people are still listening to and enjoying the sounds of Roy Orbison's unique vocals and style of music.
