Somewhere at Sea with Timothy Spall

Available from Deltamusic.co.uk & Amazon UK

The best selling book, The Voyages of the Princess Matilda, is the story of Shane and Timothy Spall and their Dutch barge The Princess Matilda, named after their grand daughter. After a summer on the Thames they head out to sea with only a road atlas and a vast amount of ignorance - and it is absolutely terrifying! On their travels, memories are triggered of childhood trips to the seaside, but also of more recent times.

Now their story is told in the Delta release of the BBC TV series Somewhere at Sea. The complete eleven episodes are included in this 3 DVD box set which is released prior to a new format version of Shane’s best selling book, destined to hit retail shelves in March 2013.

The Water Boatman

Available from Amazon & Deltamusic.co.uk

THE WATER BOATMAN

In this new series, canal enthusiast ALAN HERD travels a popular inland waterways route – The Stourport Ring in central England. It will take him through the cities of Birmingham, Worcester and Wolverhampton and on six waterways, including a stretch of the River Severn.

Along the way, Alan will be catching lifts on a variety of boats and visiting boat yards and industrial heritage sites.

Episode 1: Alan begins his journey in the heart of Birmingham, known during the Industrial Revolution as the workshop of the world.

Episode 2: Alan travels on an innovative hydrogen boat from the University of Birmingham, down the Worcester and Birmingham canal into Bournville and stops off to find out more about the home of Cadbury chocolate.

Episode 3: Alan catches a ride to Alvechurch Marina where he looks around a busy working boatyard.

Episode 4: Alan arrives at Tardebigge, an area full of boating heritage and a boaters’ rite of passage because it has thirty locks to negotiate.

Episode 5: Alan catches a boat from Stoke Wharf in the direction of Hanbury and finds out why this area is famous for salt water even though it’s so far from the sea.

Episode 6: Alan is travelling from Dunhampstead to Oddingly on the Worcester and Birmingham canal. He helps with some boat painting at a boat yard and meets an artist who is fulfilling a long-held dream of working in decorative canal crafts.

Episode 7: Alan arrives in the city of Worcester and finds out more about how the arrival of the canal impacted on the porcelain industry that flourished here.

Episode 8: Alan stops off to try his luck with some river angling before journeying to a busy working boatyard.

Episode 9: Alan arrives at the very place that The Stourport Ring is named after – Stourport on Severn. This Georgian town was a major port, with both the River Severn and the canal providing the transportation of goods to and from the sea.

Episode 10: Alan’s journey brings him to Kidderminster. In the 17th century the town was making woollen cloth and with the arrival of the canals in the 18th century, its role in the carpet industry began to flourish. Alan discovers how the industry began.

Episode 11: Alan catches a narrowboat lift along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal through the picturesque village of Cookley to Kinver.
Episode 12: Alan takes a detour up the Stourbridge canal. He discovers the area’s historical connection with glass-making and tries his hand at glass-blowing.

Episode 13: Alan arrives at the heart of the Black Country, rich in industrial heritage. He journeys along the Dudley canal, discovers more of the area’s history at Cobb’s Engine House and meets local history expert Professor Carl Chinn.

Episode 14: Alan catches a lift on a lock keeper’s narrowboat, visits a historic marina and meets a group of young working boats enthusiasts along his journey.

Episode 15: Alan catches a lift on Glyn and Rosemary Phillips’ old working boat through Wombourne and stops off to visit the amazing old Bratch Pumping station – a fine example of great British Victorian engineering.

Episode 16: Alan has reached the 21 lock flight of Wolverhampton. He journeys through the locks on Duncan Pottinger’s old working boat and stops off to try his hand at an old canal trade - traditional sign writing.

Episode 17: Alan visits a historic working boat gathering at the Black Country Living Museum beside the Dudley canal in Tipton. He finds out about historic boats “President” and “Sharpness” and journeys on a tug up to Tividale.

Episode 18: Alan has reached Oldbury in the West Midlands on his journey round the Stourport Ring in central England. As he motors along the Old line canal, he discovers remnants of its industrial heritage and joins volunteers who are cleaning the Titford Canal.

Episode 19: Alan explores the New Line in Oldbury as he catches lifts on two different narrowboats and travels under one of the busiest spots in England where two canals and a railway line meet a motorway.

Episode 20: Alan is on the last leg of his journey exploring the Stourport Ring. He catches a lift on Martin Jennens’ old working boat through Smethwick and past the Smethwick pumping station. Arriving at Hockley Port Junction, Alan walks off the towpath into Birmingham Jewellery Quarter before taking his final lift on a dining boat into the centre of the city.

Hello Kitty Stories from Stump Village

 A Strange Penguin
Badtz-Maru, a penguin from Hawaii, moves into the Stump Village. When Cinnamoroll holds a party in his Café, the hungry Badtz-Maru sneaks in to try and steal some food, but is spotted by Hello Kitty and her friends.

Shadow Puppet Show
When out foraging for food, Badtz-Maru discovers that Kitty and her friends are putting on a shadow puppet show at her house. When he claps for joy while secretly watching the show, the children capture him, give him food and welcome him into their hearts.

Hoop-A-Doop
Badtz-Maru, PomPomPurin and My Melody are playing with hula hoops, and when they perform their tricks for Cinnamoroll they make a mess in his Café. After being kicked out of the Café they go to Hello Kitty’s house to show her their tricks, where they make a mess all over again!

Playing Games
Badtz-Maru, PomPomPurin and My Melody are playing cards at Badtz-Maru’s house on a rainy day when a strong wind blows the roof off of the house. The naughty trio decide to go to both Cinnamoroll’s Café and Hello Kitty’s house, where they play dominoes with cookies and pots, breaking them and causing their friendship with Kitty to begin to crumble.

Please, Come Back!
Badtz-Maru, PomPomPurin and My Melody don’t want to play with Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll, so the naughty trio leave Stump Village without saying goodbye to them. Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll are heartbroken, so one night they go to look for their friends, and find them sleeping in the middle of the forest, when suddenly they are awakened by the howling of wolves!

Pressing The Grapes
It’s time for the grape harvest, and the children put all the grapes into a huge wine press, which makes it look a like ball pool. The children put on their bathing suits and dive into the wine press to step on the grapes.

The Mask Party
The children have all made cute animal masks, except for Badtz-Maru. One evening they all gather at Hello Kitty’s house, wearing their masks when suddenly the door opens and in walks Badtz-Maru in a monster mask, scaring all the children!

Don’t Be Picky
Cinnamoroll invites his friends to a meal, but is very disappointed with them as they’re picky and won’t eat broccoli, baby carrots or other vegetables he serves them. He decides to change their eating habits by inviting them to another meal and baking a huge loaf of bread with all the vegetables hidden inside it!

The Candy Tree
One day Cinnamoroll picks up some of the sweets lying under a huge candy tree in the forest and makes three sweet medals. He holds three competitions to award the medals to his friends, but when Badtz-Maru doesn’t win one he shakes the tree to get some sweets, until lightning strikes the tree and buries Badzt-Maru inside a heap of sweets!

Wheat Field
PomPomPurin dreams he is being attacked by the bad bird. Badtz-Maru uses an accordion like a pogo stick while Hello Kitty struggles to cheer up My Melody. PomPomPurin designs a new scarecrow to frighten the mean bird away.

The Windmill

The children finish reaping the wheat and move it to a windmil in a truck, but the fan and the grinding machine inside don’t work and the old windmill is about to fall down.

Happy Halloween
‘The Biggest Pumpkin Contest’ is held in Stump Village on Halloween day. Badtz-Maru wins and receives a pumpkin pie as a prize. The children go trick or treating in their costumes, and after receiving lots of sweets at Cinnamoroll’s house, they are sprayed with shaving cream by naughty Batdz-Maru and PomPomPurin who take away their sweets!

A New Friend
The friends meet a frog called Keroppi who lives in a teepee, who splashes them with water making them all catch colds. After a good night’s rest they all feel much better and soon become friends with the frog.

Everything is co-ordinated from H.E.'s hire centre, watched over by hire manager Pam Durey - but will she keep a cool head when one of her diggers is stolen, or when an 8-tonne telehandler flips over on a country lane? We also peek behind the scenes at Diggerland, the company's very own digger theme park. Narrated by Sean Wilson (Coronation Street's Martin Platt).

Matt Hayes Wild Fisherman - Norway

Available from Deltamusic.co.uk & Amazon UK

Wild fisherman follows British Angler Matt Hayes as he travels the world in search of unspoilt game fishing. One of the last great unspoilt wilderness areas of Europe, Norway is blessed with breathtaking scenery: from the awe-inspiring fjords to the towering mountains; from the cascading waterfalls and crystal clear lakes to the deep pine forests, Norway’s landscape is a visual feast. For anglers, Norway offers some of the most exciting sport-fishing in the world. Pike, Trout and the king of fish, the mighty Atlantic Salmon ensure that any fishing adventure is packed with excitement and opportunity.

EPISODE 1 – MJØSA, NORWAY
Britain’s two best known anglers Matt Hayes and Mick Brown join forces to fish on Norway’s largest and deepest lake – Mjøsa – for a big fish trolling adventure. The team fish overnight from boats, targeting ferox trout, and after a long cold night on the lake Mick lands a monster of a pike on the downrigger lure. With spirits buoyed the jubilant twosome land a whole host of pike and perch, but as bad weather closes in it’s time to put an end to this leg of the adventure, and for Matt to bid farewell to Mick.

EPISODE 2 – RIVER TANA
Matt fishes the River Tana, which forms a natural border between Norway and Sweden. This river is famous for its wild salmon fishing, but today it’s wild trout that are the target species. Within minutes he is into his first fish on the dry fly – a beautiful brown trout weighing about 2lbs. Over a pot of ‘iron filings’ coffee Matt discusses tactics with Pia and Hans, local fly fishing experts, and following their expert guidance he soon lands another wild trout off the riverbank, another satisfying catch. Matt ventures upstream to one of his favourite haunts; a hike across the recently thawed tundra is required to reach this beautifully secluded mountain lake. He targets wild brown trout using a float tube.

EPISODE 3 – RIVER GLOMMA, RIVER TRYSIL
The Glomma or GlÃ¥ma is Norway’s greatest river, and Matt comes here for another drift-boat adventure, this time in search of grayling. It’s back to boats to try fly fishing for trout on the River Trysil, but it’s a large grayling that steals the show and is declared Matt’s fish of the day.

EPISODE 4 – WINSNES, NORWAY
A place that is close to Matt’s heart, Winsnes and its historic lodge have been hosting fishermen for decades as they come to try their luck on one of the best salmon rivers in the world. Matt fishes the beautiful River Gaula and has his sights firmly set on catching wild salmon on the fly. During the night he lands a spectacular 21lb salmon – a fantastic result for the tricky conditions. After a bout of rain, it’s the trout that are biting, but at the end of the day it’s time to bid a hasty retreat, as the river looks set to flood.

Matt Hayes Wild Fisherman - Mozambique

Available from Deltamusic.co.uk & Amazon Uk

Wild Fisherman Mozambique follows Matt Hayes as he joins local guide Wesley Peens to fish one of the most sparsely populated regions in the world, in an effort to catch a giant trevally on the fly. In four action packed episodes, Matt embarks on a fishing adventure that sees him combat extreme weather, desert roads and a wild, untamed landscape.

Episode 1- Vilanculos

Matt Hayes joins enthusiastic surf fishing expert Wesley Peens in Mozambique, one of the last great sport fishing wildernesses.

After three gruelling flights in ever decreasing sized planes Matt finally arrives in Vilanculos, one of Mozambique’s largest settlements, only to discover his luggage has gone missing.

The fish of Mozambique are strikingly beautiful and are also incredibly strong; fishing on the fly rod Matt is making life hard for himself, but the greater challenge bears the greater reward, and every fish landed is a huge achievement on light tackle.

Fishing from 3 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the high heat is starting to tire Matt, he begins to realise this fishing adventure is going to be more of a challenge than he first appreciated. He will need to find some stamina if he is going to succeed in catching the fish of a lifetime – the giant trevally.

Episode 2 - Linene Lodge

As the unsettled weather calms, Matt heads out to sea in search of big fish, and after landing some unusual species off the reef, Matt takes a smoking bite on the bait rod and lands a career first – a yellow tail.

Matt takes a boat ride to Linene Lodge, where the beauty of the scenery is overwhelming and forms the perfect location for some more sport fishing action. A bonito tuna engages Matt in a game of cat and mouse, it takes all of Matt’s skill and cunning to outmanoeuvre and land this exceptionally strong and powerful fish

The day is completed with an extraordinary sailfish the taking the bait on incredibly light tackle. A long and exhausting pursuit entails after which the fish is successful tagged and measured in order to assist in essential conservational research.

Another day on the water and Matt and Wes head out to an area called the Lighthouse, a truly pristine environment. The swell is heavy, and as Matt turns a fetching shade of green, they locate the target species of the day, the rather appropriately named green spot trevally. Working as a team, Matt and Wes successfully land some spectacular fish, but then the party is over as a passing predator fish decides to pay them an unscheduled visit and it is all hands on deck to land this king of the reef.

Episode 3- Rio Azul

Matt embarks on the long and dusty drive from Vilanculos to the lodge at Rio Azul, and leaving behind all traces of civilisation, the journey is completed by a 20 km drive along a coast road, only negotiable at low tide.

The secluded paradise located on a river delta that awaits the weary travellers is well worth the discomfort, and Matt is soon looking forward to getting out on the boat for the next fishing challenge. However, there are no lazy lie-ins scheduled, and as morning breaks Matt finds himself 2 hours offshore searching for an elusive underwater reef.

As the swell increases Matt realises his vulnerability, in a tiny boat surrounded by vast swathes of water inhabited by species of fish who might just like to eat him. His fears are cast aside as after trying a range of different flies Matt gets into his first fish of the day - a bludger kingfish .

After many tiring hours at sea the team set up camp on a deserted island, where they plan to stay the night. The weather has become increasingly erratic, but within hours of daybreak Matt is back on the beach as a school of bonito crowd the surf - with the obligatory predators in tow.

Episode 4 - Rio Azul

It is the final day at Rio Azul and Matt is feeling ambitious. He has finally found his sea legs and is ready to try his luck at a fishing hotspot, on a reef 2 hours offshore. This is the perfect spot for landing Matt’s dream fish – the much sought after giant trevally.

With Wes casting relentlessly using specialist baiting techniques, Matt is happy to stick to the fly and watch as fish after fish is pulled in by the ‘young buck’. Yellow spot trevally, yellow spot kingfish, jobfish, and king mackerel are all caught and released in perfect condition. With hopes of a big fish fading fast, the team head back to the lodge to regroup.

Matt and the team move on to their final destination, Hells Gate lodge, a long journey by road, air and water. However, things do not go smoothly, and they are in danger of being stranded in the dunes, and to add to their problems the weather turns.

Matt faces a fisherman’s nightmare as the seas rage and storms batter the coast, until at last the weather breaks and Matt takes to the boat for one last hurrah. This is Matt’s final opportunity to land a giant trevally on the fly, but after the unsettled weather, will his efforts prove futile?

Engelbert Humperdinck is to represent theUK at the next Eurovision song content in 2012 it was revealed today. The75 year old has had a long and successfull career spanning several decades.  He scored a UK number one with The Last Waltz and had other hits including There Goes My Everything and A Man Without Love.

Crying - The Magic Of Roy Orbison

Crying - The Magic Of Roy Orbison now playing on Spotify, iTunes & Amazon

Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988) was an American singer-songwriter, best known for his distinctive, powerful voice, complex compositions, and dark emotional ballads. Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly/country and western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis.

His first single for Monument failed to chart, and its follow-up ‘Uptown’ only made it to #72 on Billboard’s Top 100 in 1959, but it was his next single, ‘Only the Lonely’ (turned down by both Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers) that made him a star, reaching #2 in the U.S. and #1 in the UK and Australia. Engineer Porter experimented with a completely new recording strategy, creating the mix from the top down rather from the bottom up, beginning with the close-miked background vocals in the foreground and ending with the rhythm section soft in the background, a combination which became Orbison's trademark.

Why They Sank Titanic

Why They Sunk The Titanic. Available on Amazon & Deltamusic.co.uk now!

Everyone knows the story of the Titanic, how the largest moving object ever fashioned by the hand of man hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sank in the middle of the North Atlantic, and 1,500 lives were lost. The tragedy has been well documented in books and on films. No matter how often the story is told, it never fails to capture the imagination.

It is a story that has left many questions unanswered, and the programme provides an intriguing hypothesis that the ship that plummeted two miles to the bottom of the sea was not the Titanic but its sister ship the Olympic.

This film is based upon the research of Andrew Newton and includes the evidence of the British and American inquiries, the eye witness reports of survivors, newspapers of the day, photographs, video, film and radio broadcasts.
The views and opinions presented in this film are based on actual evidence and legitimate inference.

The people depicted are all deceased and can shed no light on the mystery of the Titanic’s sinking.

This hypothesis is presented for viewers to reach their own conclusions.

It may be the ultimate conspiracy – or could it be the truth?

1959 The Year That Changed Jazz

BBC4 Friday 17th February 12.00 Midnight

1959 was the seismic year jazz broke away from complex bebop music to new forms, allowing soloists unprecedented freedom to explore and express. Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus (check out our Spotify playlist we put together following the event) made ground-breaking albums each a high watermark for the artists and a powerful reflection of the times. Rarely seen archive performances help vibrantly bring the era to life and explore what made these albums vital both in 1959 and the 50 years since.

Charles Mingus wrote his autobiography in 1971, appropriately titled “Beneath The Underdog”, which nakedly chronicled his turbulent life as a composer and player of some of the most emotionally intense music in the history of jazz. Charles Mingus fought tenaciously against the overt racism he encountered, problems exacerbated by his own egocentric nature and personal demons which led to many damaging clashes of personality.  Throughout it all however, he determinedly built up a unique style of music both as an imaginative soloist who chose largely to ignore conventional harmonic principles and as a writer who, while clearly strongly influenced by Duke Ellington, produced a substantial body of innovative work.

Dave Brubeck’s stunning 1959 album “Time Out” proved to be a landmark recording in the history of jazz music as it appealed to a wider audience than previously thought possible and contained the hit single “Take Five”, an infectious tune set in 5/4 time which crossed over to the pop market, and the distinctive opening track “Blue Rondo A La Turk”. The group comprised the leader on piano, Eugene Wright on bass, Joe Morello on drums and the inimitable Paul Desmond, who composed that best-known number, on lyrical alto saxophone. Presented in its entirety here, the seven tracks range over highly unusual time signatures with influences derived from blues and classical sources, with underrated compositions like “Three To Get Ready” and especially “Kathy’s Waltz” highlighting the work of a unique unit.

Miles Dewey Davis was born in Alton, Illinois in 1926 into a middle class family who provided him with his first trumpet at the age of thirteen. Miles Dewey Davis gained early experience of playing in public as a guest in Billy Eckstine’s travelling big band in 1944 and, while still a teenager, with Charlie Parker’s dynamic bebop pioneers in New York. He had won a scholarship to the city’s prestigious Juilliard School but quickly became drawn to the burgeoning new movement of modern jazz played at Harlem’s Mintons and the 52nd Street clubs led by Parker, Monk, Clarke and fellow trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Miles Dewey Davis sometimes struggled to keep up with the breathtakingly fast tempos favoured by the boppers, but instead developed a unique sound instantly recognisable and perfectly suited to the lonely, largely melancholy repertoire which became the trademark of his introspective appeal.

Barber, Bilk & Ball Review by Barry McCanna

On the face of it, this reissue should be welcomed, particularly by those who can recall the trad boom of the late fifties/early sixties. It contains 45 recordings from that era by three of the foremost traditional jazz bands, which means that all are over fifty years old. Given that such material should attract also a new generation of listeners it’s important that it is presented in such a way as to inform, and the liner note makes a nod in that direction with three thumbnail sketches of the three bandleaders, but that is as far as it goes. The novitiate will search in vain for any detail of the personnel involved, apart that is from passing reference to Pat Halcox.

The compilation is a cross-section of the sort of numbers being played at that time, of which the most successful in my book are the slow clarinet solos by Acker Bilk and Monty Sunshine, although you’ll search in vain for reference to the latter, since they’re simply credited to Chris Barber (who played bass on Monty’s solos, if memory serves). The excellence of Acker Bilk’s band tended to be overshadowed at the time by their fancy outfits and arcane sleeve notes, but purists were outvoted.

Some of the Chris Barber tracks are live recordings, culled presumably from his “In Concert” LPs. I believe that “Snake Rag” dates from March 1951, and was recorded by Chris Barber’s New Orleans Jazz Band at the Hammersmith Palais, with a completely different line-up; it certainly sounds like it! Listen out also for Ottilie Patterson, aka then as Mrs. Barber, who takes several vocals, including a rousing version of “The Saints”.

Dame Shirley Bassey, DBE (born 8 January 1937[1]), is a Welsh singer. She found fame in the late 1950s and was "one of the most popular female vocalists in Britain during the last half of the 20th century".[2][3] In the US, in particular, she is best known for recording the theme songs to the James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), and Moonraker (1979), and is a UNESCO Artist for Peace

Art Pepper - Jazz Manifesto

Art Pepper now playing on SpotifyiTunes & Amazon

His last comeback saw Pepper, which had started his career in Stan Kenton's big band, becoming a member of Buddy Rich's Big Band from 1968 to 1969. In 1977 and 1978 he made two well received tours of Japan.[1] During this period, he recorded two albums - Goin' Home with George Cables, and Winter Moon with a string orchestra - which were among his favorites and which he considered his definitive achievements.

Art Blakey - Jazz Manifesto

Art Blakey now playing on SpotifyiTunes & Amazon

By the late forties and early fifties, Blakey was backing musicians such as Miles Davis, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk — he is often considered to have been Monk's most empathetic drummer,[5] and he played on both Monk's first recording session as a leader (for Blue Note Records in 1947) and his final one (in London in 1971), as well as many in between.
