CLASSIC EARLY & VINTAGE TRACTORS

Filmed at the 2002 great Dorset Steam Fair and featuring a sensational array of pre-1930s tractors, this documentary is a treat for any enthusiast. Many of the highlighted vehicles were built by manufacturers still in business today, while others carry nameplates of tractor makers long since departed. Of particular interest is the 1901 Ivel and the huge Case, each of which would look more at home on the great American prairies than in the rolling Dorset countryside. THE SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY

Running between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, the 16 miles of reopened track of the Severn Valley Railway is one of the longest Heritage Railways in the country and runs through one of the most picturesque valleys in the West Midlands. This charming documentary from 2005 tells the story of the history of the SVR, from conception through opening in 1862 to its final closure at the hands of Beeching in 1962.

DEAN FOREST RAILWAY

Set in the picturesque and tranquil Royal Forest in Gloucester, the Dean Forest Railway winds its way from the line’s HQ at Norchard through Lydney Town and St Mary’s Halt to Lydney Junction at one end, and Whitecroft and Parkend at the other. With plenty to see, this is one of the UK’s most enchanting restoration railways and this 2005 documentary shows the route at its best.

THE BATTLEFIELD LINE

Opened in 1873 as the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway, the Battlefield Line was renamed by its present owners when the track was re-laid back to Shenton Station, which partly stands on the site of 1845’s Battle of Bosworth. Traffic ceased on the original line as early as 1931, before its final closure in 1970, since when the Shackerston Railway Society has gradually rebuilt part of the line from Shackerston to Shenton, and today a pleasant ride can be enjoyed through the Leicestershire countryside. The line features a host of rolling stock and some impressive buildings, as well as a fine museum. This 2005 programme celebrates the line, its history and its current custodians.

BRECON MOUNTAIN RAILWAY

Telling the story of two railway companies in this documentary from 2005: first, the Brecon Mountain Railway, a heritage track opened in 1980, its narrow-gauge track having been laid over the original track bed of the second, the Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil Junction Railway Company. The BMR line runs from Pant Station to just short of the Summit or Torpantau Tunnel, at 1313 feet, the highest ever built in the UK. Once renowned as the most spectacular in the land, the Brecon and Merthyr northern section delighted passengers with magnificent views of old locomotives struggling at the head of their charges as they attempted to pull them over gradients of up to 1:38, over the mountains and through the valleys, past the reservoirs between Brecon and Merthyr.

Take a stroll down memory lane with this series of Out Of Town programmes presented by Jack Hargreaves. Let Jack be your guide to a bygone era as he looks at the skills and lifestyles of the British countryside of 30 years ago. In his own unique, easy going style, Jack introduces country crafts and pursuits, animal husbandry, fly and coarse fishing, gypsy fairs, hobbies, nature and a way of life with a depth of knowledge rarely equalled. Fishermen and farriers, horsemen and horticulturists were all featured as Jack took the Southern Television cameras around the country to explore pursuits and activities which have become a nostalgic historical record of life in Britain from a past generation.

Out of Town ended in 1981 when Southern Television lost its ITV franchise. In 1986, working with Steve Wade, and using extracts from original location films by cameraman Stan Bréhaut, Jack added a new commentary for 28 “programmes” to be re created. New footage, presented by Jack and filmed in his shed at his home - Raven Cottage near Belchalwell in Dorset - was also filmed.

Out Of Town With Jack Hargreaves: The Lost Episodes

The 34 charming programmes in this collection of ten DVDs are presented as they were originally broadcast three decades ago, and provide ample evidence of why the enchanting charm of Out Of Town have endured for so many people for so many years.

For over 20 years Out Of Town was a television programme that provided a window on country life in rural Britain. Hundreds of programmes were broadcast by Southern Television but they were feared lost when the company lost its ITV franchise in 1981.

Apart from 28 episodes that were recreated by presenter Jack Hargreaves in 1986, using extracts from films used in the original TV programmes with new footage filmed by Jack, it was presumed that all other examples of the original Out Of Town series had been lost forever.

In 2012, after extensive research by Simon Baddeley, Simon Winters, and Southern Television archive expert David King, 34 complete original episodes of Out Of Town – not seen since their original broadcast in 1980 & 1981 - came to light and are now being made available on DVD by Delta.

Over twenty eight hours (including bonus features) of Out Of Town are presented on these ten DVDs. Only edited versions of some of the location films that are included have been seen on DVD – featured in the 28 programmes produced in 1986 - but the significant part of them are being presented in their original form for the first time since they were broadcast three decades ago.

The discovery of these programmes ensures that Jack’s legacy on screen is preserved and that the unsentimental charm of Out Of Town will live on for future generations.

Each of the DVDs in this collection has a bonus feature which allows the viewer to see the unedited versions of the Out Of Town episodes in their original broadcast format, including the off screen countdown clock with comments from production staff and an occasional remark from Jack Hargreaves.

Episode One:

Coarse fishing: It’s the last day of the coarse fishing season and Jack is on a mission to land a big roach.

Yerro’s operation: Jack hires a veterinary team to deal with his noisy mule, Yerro. After a tricky operation, expertly carried out by Salisbury vet Mr Burgess, Yerro is back on his feet and Jack is happy with his mule.

Episode Two:

A river for all seasons: It’s April 19th, when the cuckoo arrives in the south of England and Jack watches as grubs turn into flies. Meanwhile, salmon fisherman Tom Williams lands a beauty.

Bass fishing: A young starling visits Jack in the middle of the ocean when he goes on a bass fishing trip with the boys from Herne Bay.

Pebbles: Jack reflects on the age of a worn pebble rock found at the top of Southampton Water.

Ted Hayden impersonates a wanted man and joins Gentry’s gang only to learn later that Gentry was the one who killed his father. He saves Fay Winters’ Dad’s ranch from Gentry and also rescues his long-lost brother Spud.

The Man From Utah (NTSC)

The Marshal sends John Weston to a rodeo to discover who is killing the prize-winning riders. Barton has organized the rodeo and plans to leave with all the prize money put up by the townspeople. When it appears that Weston will beat Barton’s rider, he has his men prepare the same fate for him that befell the other riders.

The gunslinger’s desire to change is offset by his strong desire to avenge his foster father’s murder.

Disc 1: Merseyside
This wide-ranging 2008 programme visits locations up, down and on both sides, of the River Mersey where the Beatles honed their talents. The destinations include localities as varied as Bootle, the industrial town to the north of Liverpool, and New Brighton, the fairground paradise of the Liverpudlian.
Along the way, we take our own journey on a ferry across the Mersey, the river whose merchant seamen literally smuggled rock ‘n’ roll into the UK in the form of vinyl LPs. Last but not least, we meet a wide range of Liverpudlians, the people whose warmth and dry wit were shared by the group, and were an integral part of their launch into superstardom.

For many visitors, Liverpool is one giant theme park... and the theme is the Beatles. At least, such is the suggestion of Spencer Leigh, Liverpudlian, disc jockey for BBC Radio Merseyside and investigator of the Beatles phenomenon for over forty years. At the same time, we meet personalities who made the Liverpool scene the epicentre of the 60s cultural explosion, including Allan Williams (the man who gave away the Beatles), Kingsize Taylor, (the man who brought rock’n’roll into Liverpool) and that’s just for starters. Essential viewing for anyone who was around at the time, and all the others who wish they had been!

Liverpool DJ Spencer Leigh visits the Hamburg locations that played a vital roll in shaping the early career of The Beatles while highlighting “The Hamburg Sound” exhibition and speaking with the friends and collaborators who all witnessed the band’s stratospheric ascent to the top of the charts.
A celebration of the artistic environment that helped to produce one of the most popular musical acts ever, this 2007 documentary is sure to appeal to music archivists and anyone interested in our rock and roll heritage.
