George Formby Happy Go Lucky Me

Available from Amazon & iTunes, Spotify

Superb new collection of ALL George Formby's finest and funniest songs. 30 original recordings digitally remastered, including Happy Go Lucky Me (as recently featured in a Sainsbury's TV campaign), Leaning On A Lamp Post, When I'm Cleaning Windows and many more.

This CD is the perfect starting point for the Formby-curious, and a great collection for the committed fan.

George Formby, born George Hoy Booth, 26th May 1904, was a singer/ songwriter, British comedy actor and a comedian. His style was to sing light but comical songs, played on the banjolele (a ukulele-banjo). When he took his first steps into the limelight in the 1930s-40s he was a major star of both the stage and the screen.

The name of George Formby came after his father passed away in 1921. George went on to use this name after his father used it as his stage name throughout his career as a comedian in Lancashire. When George Formby was younger he had undergone two moves before he settled down in the home that he lived in when he later died in 1961. On the second move he had dropped his earlier career as a jockey, and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps as a performer/ comedian, performing his father’s material until he was settled in and knew what the audience liked to hear.

The songs in which he sung on his early days on stage were full of comic and double entendre played on a banjolele. This later on became his trademark as people enjoyed the catchy tune that accompanied the comical lyrics.

Although George Formby died at the young age of just 56, he is still known and appreciated today for his approach to and style of music, making him one of the more unique musicians that people love to listen to, to give a variety in genre and style.

Roy Orbsion Dream Baby

Available from Amazon & Spotify and iTunes. A brilliant new collection of greatest hits from 'The Big O'. 59 original recordings digitally remastered.

Includes, Crying, Only The Lonely, Running Scared and many more.

Roy Orbison, born Roy Kelton Orbison, 23rd April 1936 in Madison, Tennessee was an American singer songwriter well known by the nickname ‘The Big O’, and his distinctive and very powerful voice, multipart compositions and emotional, dark ballads.

Roy Orbison was also very well known for standing in one position when performing, wearing black clothes and dark glasses.

This added to his mystery persona. Although he sang each of his songs in a natural baritone, music scholars have suggested that he could have had a three-four octave range, in which he could have used to vary his music/ singing style.

Roy Orbison's greatest success came between 1960 and 1964, when 22 of his songs were placed in the Billboard Top Forty including ‘Oh Pretty Woman’ and ‘Only the Lonely’. His career began to deteriorate throughout the 1970s until several covers of his songs and the use of ‘In Dreams’ in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet revived his career in the 80s.

From reviving his career in music, in 1988 he joined the supergroup Travelling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, as well as releasing a solo album. Later on in 1988 he died of a heart attack, completely ending his career, but not taking his success of brilliant music and performances with it. To this day, people are still listening to and enjoying the sounds of Roy Orbison's unique vocals and style of music.

Barber Bilk and Ball

Donald Christopher ‘Chris’ Barber was born 17 April 1930 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. He studied double bass and trombone at London’s Guildhall School of Music, and in 1948 put his first band together, the King Oliver-inspired Barber New Orleans band.  In 1953, he co-founded  Dixieland band The Jazzmen with cornetist and trumpeter Ken Colyer, but after Colyer left in ’54 the band became The Chris Barber Band. Barber and Lonnie Donegan are credited with starting the skiffle craze with their 1955 cover of Leadbelly’s ‘Rock Island Line’, the first ever debut single to go Gold in the UK, which made the US Top 10.

Bernard Stanley ‘Acker’ Bilk was born 29 January 1929 in Pensford, Somerset. He was more interested in athletics than music as a boy, losing two front teeth in a fight and part of a finger sledging, which he maintained affected his clarinet playing style.  He first acquired a clarinet, for which he had to fashion a reed out of scrap wood, when serving with the Royal Engineers in the Suez Canal Zone.

Kenneth Daniel ‘Kenny’ Ball was born 22 May 1930 in Ilford, Essex.  Ball played the trumpet as a sideman in the bands led by Charlie Galbraith, Sid Phillips and others before forming his own Dixieland combo in 1958. Their recording of Cole Porter’s ‘Samantha’ was a UK hit in 1961, but their biggest hit was the Transatlantic smash ‘Midnight in Moscow’, which made it to #2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK singles charts .

Trombonist Chris Barber, clarinettist Acker Bilk and trumpeter Kenny Ball were the acknowledged masters of British trad (traditional) jazz. Barber Bilk and Ball features 45 original recordings digitally remastered and is available from Delta 27-02-2012

A great companion piece to Delta’s 2011 3 CD set ‘It’s Trad Man!’

Allen Pollack’s In Tune Magazine Review ( Perez Prado CD )

PEREZ PRADO: MAMBO KING, Delta Bygone Days 8YD77065

A very apt title  for this release from the bandleader musician (singer, organist and pianist), and composer often labelled "The King of the Mambo."With recordings covering the period 1949- 1958 (some vocals uncredited) I was impressed by both sound quality and choice of material with MAMBO No. 5, CHERRY PINK AND APPLE-BLOSSOM WHITE and PATRICIA emanating from Prado's hit popularity package.

However, more off-centre Latin-beat interpretations include Leroy Anderson' famous composition SYNCOPATED CLOCK MAMBO along with an effective nod towards Johnnie Ray's SUCH A NIGHT and transitional reworking of C'ESTS l BON. ANNA and SILVANA MANGANO link film and its star of the successful 1951-released ltalian movie whilst two tracks - FREDDY and SWEET AND GENTLE - are heightened by clicking cha-cha heels and purring vocal seduction of the inimitable Eartha Kitt. Twenty full-blooded tracks containing Latin pleasure!

Johnny Mathis - Two Facets Of a Burgeoning Talent

Five Star Review!

In 1960, when Johnny Mathis was just beginning to establish himself, Columbia recognised his burgeoning talent by producing two concept albums as a 2-LP set. Both the vinyl version, and Sony's 1999 digital reissue, are highly sought after by Johnny's legion of fans. "Rhythms of Broadway" presents a dozen pulsating showstoppers, played con brio by Ralph Burns & his Orchestra, and delivered with gusto by Johnny, who seems fired up by the accompaniment, as well he should be. The mood changes with the smoother "Ballads of Broadway", and Glenn Osser's beautifully relaxed orchestral sound, against which Johnny's velvet voice glides like a caress.

Delta is to be congratulated for making this superb set available again at such an affordable price. Sound quality is superb, and the liner note albeit brief, nevertheless sets out the details of Johnny's early career, and lists the provenance of the two dozen songs on offer, most of which are classics of the musical stage. The set should be a must have for long-standing Mathis devotees who can replace their worn vinyl. It should appeal also to younger fans who've never heard it, and aficionados of songs from the musicals.

Songs From the TV Series Six - Five Special Review

SONGS FROM THE TV SERIES SIX-FIVE SPECIAL!
Review by Allen Pollack

Recalling the celebrated 1957 television series, this is the Original album recorded with screaming girls between tracks to suggest a live ambiance and allowing the John Barry Seven to open with the appropriate LET'S HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME.  Frequent guests are naturally represented and include Jim Dale (CRAZY DREAM), The King Brothers (COLD, COLD SHOWER) Laurie London ( PICK A BALE OF COTTON) and the energetic Don Lang ( YOU STARTED SOMETHING ) whilst Jimmy Jackson contributes the apt SIX-FIVE JIVE but Adam Faith who also appeared frequently on the shows sits this one out. Seventeen bonus tracks help fill the disc with more of the same extracted from various singles; bringing in Petula Clark to represent otherwise absent females- after all she appeared in the film version singing BABY LOVER. All good fun from a less complicated age

Available on Amazon an iTunes UK and Amazon CD

Tribute to Mario Lanza on BBC Radio 2, 20:00 GMT

Tonight, June 17th 2011 BBC radio 2 plays tribute to Mario Lanza.  Mario Lanza was born Alfredo Arnold Cocozza on 31 January 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - from his mother’s maiden name, Maria Lanza. While still at school young Alfredo became a local champion weightlifter but he had a second God-given talent … an immediately identifiable operatic tenor singing voice which was ultimately to bring him worldwide acclaim. He began studying singing at the age of 15, and was signed to Columbia Artistes Management, kick-starting his future career performing in local concerts. During the Second World War Lanza served in the US Army from 1943 and he sang in many concerts for his fellow comrades, billed as ’the Service Caruso’, as well as performing in the chorus of the popular Forces show, Winged Victory.

Lanza made his professional operatic stage debut in 1948, performing in Madame Butterfly at the New Orleans Opera House. However he decided his singing talents were better displayed on the silver screen which also brought him to a much wider, worldwide public, and his performances in New Orleans proved to be the last professional operatic performances of his career onstage (although he made several guest appearances in other concerts in later years). The following year Lanza made his movie debut, co-starring with Kathryn Grayson in That Midnight Kiss, performing a selection of popular song standards and classical pieces. Lanza followed it with another cinema hit, The Toast Of New Orleans, which teamed him with Grayson once again. In the film he performed Be My Love, composed by Sammy Cahn and Nicholas Brodszky, and Lanza’s recording sold over one million copies in the US alone, when released by RCA Records. Be My Love became closely identified with him for the rest of his life.

The musical memories will never be allowed to die. This collection of Lanza favourites includes many more songs associated with his relatively short career. One can only conjecture as to what the future would have held for Mario Lanza, had he lived. However, his electrifying singing voice lives on and this collection will bring back many rich memories for countless fans and admirers everywhere.
