Roy Orbison, born Roy Kelton Orbison, 23rd April 1936 in Madison, Tennessee was an American singer songwriter well known by the nickname ‘The Big O’, and his distinctive and very powerful voice, multipart compositions and emotional, dark ballads.

Roy Orbison was also very well known for standing in one position when performing, wearing black clothes and dark glasses.

This added to his mystery persona. Although he sang each of his songs in a natural baritone, music scholars have suggested that he could have had a three-four octave range, in which he could have used to vary his music/ singing style.

Roy Orbison's greatest success came between 1960 and 1964, when 22 of his songs were placed in the Billboard Top Forty including ‘Oh Pretty Woman’ and ‘Only the Lonely’. His career began to deteriorate throughout the 1970s until several covers of his songs and the use of ‘In Dreams’ in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet revived his career in the 80s.

From reviving his career in music, in 1988 he joined the supergroup Travelling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, as well as releasing a solo album. Later on in 1988 he died of a heart attack, completely ending his career, but not taking his success of brilliant music and performances with it. To this day, people are still listening to and enjoying the sounds of Roy Orbison's unique vocals and style of music.
